Large Eddy Simulation of Premixed Combustion Using Artificial Flame Thickening

Optimus, 1. Auflage 2012

This study addresses the simulation of premixed combustion for stationary gas turbines and future aero engines, aiming to improve predictive capabilities essential for pollutant reduction and combustor design. It presents a coupled approach to model chemical reactions within turbulent flows, with a detailed investigation of grid dependency and computational efficiency to enhance practical applicability.

Beschreibung

This work considers the simulation of premixed combustion with regard to the application in stationary gas turbines and future aero engines. With respect to the pollutant reduction of current devices as well as complementary technologies in the context of renewable energies, premixed flames are of increasing importance but exhibit reduced stability properties compared to conventional non-premixed systems. Regarding this, the simulation can provide detailed insight into the physical mechanisms for scientific research as well as help in the design of combustors in an industrial environment. However, due to the large complexity of the process the predicting capabilities are currently insufficient to serve as a reliable tool and it is the objective of this work to contribute in improving the simulation towards that capability. As given by the title, a joint approach is presented here to compute the chemical reaction embedded in the turbulent flow. The required steps from the theoretical background towards the application to systems of practical relevance are thoroughly investigated with emphasis on the grid-dependency of flame propagation and computational efficiency.
